Aruba had a population of less than 9000 in 1920. The island’s economy was
sluggish after the mining of gold, and the exploitation of phosphate had come to a
standstill. However, change had been on the horizon since 1914, when significant oil reserves were discovered in Venezuela’s Maracaibo basin. This discovery was to transform Aruba and provide significant opportunities for its people, its business community and, in particular, the company that became MetaCorp.
