A dramatic setback. June 1931, Shon Eddy's son 13-year old Gerard was working with projectionists George Dongen and Felix Dirksz, when the film reel got stuck in the projector. The heat of the lamp ignited the film and after pulling it out of the projector it dropped on the floor and the entire movie house went up in flames. Gloria was destroyed. 300 movie-goers, projectionists and Gerard got out without a scratch. Shon Eddy rebuilt the theater only to have it burn down again a few years later. After the second fire in 1935, Shon Eddy invested in a concrete building for the Gloria Theater.
